Surrender Triggers in Life Insurance : Classification and Risk Predictions

چکیده
This paper shows that some policy features are crucial to explain the decision of the policyholder to surrender her contract. We point it out by applying two segmentation models to a life insurance portfolio : the Logistic Regression model and the Classification And Regression Trees model. Protection as well as Savings lines of business are impacted, and results clearly explicit that the profit benefit option is highly discriminant. We develop the study with endowment products. First we present the models and discuss their assumptions and limits. Then we test different policy features and policyholder’s characteristics to be lapse triggers so as to segment a portfolio in risk classes regarding the surrender choice : duration and profit benefit option are essential. Finally, we explore the main differences of both models in terms of operational results and discuss about

Early Default Risk and Surrender Risk: Impacts on Participating Life Insurance Policies
We study the fair valuation of participating life insurance policies with surrender guarantees when an early default mechanism is imposed by a regulator. An insurance company is forced to be liquidated once a solvency threshold is reached before maturity. The early default regulation affects the contracts’ value not only directly via changing the contracts’ payment streams but also indirectly v...
متن کاملRisk Management of Policyholder Behavior in Equity-Linked Life Insurance
The financial guarantees embedded in variable annuity (VA) contracts expose insurers to a wide range of risks, lapse risk being one of them. When policyholders’ lapse behavior differs from the assumptions used to hedge VA contracts, the effectiveness of dynamic hedging strategies can be significantly impaired. By studying how the fee structure and surrender charges affect surrender incentives, ...
متن کاملFrom deterministic to stochastic surrender risk models: Impact of correlation crises on economic capital
In this paper we raise the matter of considering a stochastic modeling of the surrender rate instead of the classical S-shaped deterministic curve (in function of the spread), still used in almost all insurance companies. A stochastic model in which surrenders are conditionally independent with respect to a S-curve disturbance would be tempting in some extreme scenarii, especially to address th...
متن کاملFair Valuation of Life Insurance Liabilities: The Impact of Interest Rate Guarantees, Surrender Options and Bonus Policies - Proceedings AFIR 1999 - Tokyo, Japan
The paper analyzes one of the most common life insurance products the so-called participariflg (or with pro@) policy. This type of contract stands in contrast to UnitLinked (UL) products in that interest is credited to the policy periodically according to some mechanism which smoothes past returns on the life insurance company’s (LIC) assets. As is the case for UL products, the participating po...
متن کاملThe Impact of the Secondary Market on Life Insurers’ Surrender Profits
Life insurers often claim that the life settlement industry reduces their surrender profits and leads to an adverse shift in their portfolio of insured risks, i.e., bad risks remain in the portfolio instead of surrendering. In this paper, we aim to quantify the effect of altered surrender behavior––subject to the health status of an insured––in a portfolio of life insurance contracts on the sur...
